Press Release: Cancellation of Funfest 2026

FunFest cancelled
West Monkton Parish Council has reviewed feedback from the recent Spring Shindig – Grand Opening of Maidenbrook Country Park event and, after careful consideration, has made the decision to cancel Funfest for 2026 that was due to take place 11th July.
While the event saw record attendance and generated a surplus which has been donated to the Poppy of Honour Operation Tribute Fund, a number of significant concerns were raised about the behaviour of some adults and children in attendance. These included damage to the pond area, nursery and other parts of the park, incidents of rude and abusive behaviour towards staff and volunteers.
Being that the purpose of the event was the official opening of Maidenbook Country Park, it was disheartening to witness disruption and a lack of respect shown during the ribbon cutting and speeches. There were also multiple complaints regarding the impact of fireworks on wildlife.
Given the considerable volunteer effort invested in maintaining and enhancing the natural and community assets at Maidenbrook Country Park and the running of community events, West Monkton Parish Council discussed whether the park remains a suitable venue for largescale, festival style events.
Volunteers expressed understandable upset following the damage, behaviour and disrespect witnessed, and it was agreed that they should have a stronger voice in decisions about future events held at the park. Activities more in keeping with the park’s military heritage and community focus were felt to be more appropriate in future.
The Parish Council will donate the money raised at the event to the Poppy of Honour Operation Tribute Fund, as originally intended.
We remain committed to supporting events that reflect the values of the park, respect the work of volunteers, and provide a positive experience for the whole community.
