Flood mitigation through leaky dam renovation…

Leaky dam management 3

Leaky dams are a natural flood management structure, made from natural materials to provide a permeable barrier to flood waters. We have recently been reviewing a series of these dams along the Allen’s Brook (along our eastern park boundary), with some of our keen-eyed visitors possibly noticing some reconstruction at the brook’s northernmost point in the Park.

The hard work of both Park volunteers and our friends at the Somerset Wildlife Trust have led to the reinforcement of this structure, with further work still to be undertaken downstream.

Along with flood risk reduction, these dams also help to form pools with diverse habitats for wildlife and improve water quality. If you would like to get involved in leaky dam renovation, please feel free to get in touch and join our volunteer team!
